Reflections on the Holocaust text In Memorys Kitchen, edited by Cara De Silva (Jason Aronson Inc. Northvale, NJ. 1996) -- a unique collection of recipes written by women in Teresienstadt Camp (Terezin), 60 kms. northwest of Prague. One is awe struck at the spirit behind each recipe, all collected in the midst of starvation.
With the ingredients of defiance, spiritual revolt, and courageous imagination, these women turn their thoughts towards the world before the camps. Here they reinvent a time lived with food in their kitchens -- their family nearby as they cooked.
Like many of the Holocaust woman themselves, some of the pieces offered below, created with the emphemera of my own kitchen and an uprooted tree, have long since dissolved into the air, leaving only the insubstantial memories offered by these photographs. (All work available only as sets, except for the remaining individual pieces in #3.)
